ditzie != Spammer…

June 16th, 2010 No comments

So, it has come to my attention that a lot of newly registered accounts (I’m talking about the Beta Gallery here) are not being activated. Since ditzie uses the fairly typical “activate by email” method (you register, we email you a link, and you click it to activate your account), my guess is that these registration emails are not being received. Since I have confirmed numerous times that ditzie is actually sending them, I believe that most of our registration emails are being sent to your spam folder.

This kinda makes sense. See, is not a high volume mailer and hasn’t yet earned itself a good reputation. We certainly don’t send spam (we hate spam, and in fact, we don’t send anything except for activation emails), but the major email providers (AOL, Gmail, MSN, Yahoo) probably haven’t picked up on the fact that our link-containing form-based email is legit.

So, if you happen to see that a registration mail from ditzie make its way into your spam folder, can you try flagging it as not-spam? Based on our provider, placing the mail into the Inbox, removing the spam label, or clicking a “not spam” button will send the mail provider a signal that the message is not junk mail. The more people who do this, the better reputation ditzie builds as being a good sender, and the sooner this problem goes away.

Slightly more “Open Beta”

June 3rd, 2010 3 comments

As of now, I have removed the “activation by administrator” control from the ditzie Beta Site‘s gallery. It will now use ordinary email confirmation activation. Now that I have a better mechanism for accepting feedback in place (yonder WordPress blog), I feel a little bit more comfortable opening up the floodgates. Of course, this means being more “on guard” looking for abuse (which is why I’ve historically hated running open community sites like forums), but I trust that ditzie will eventually develop a sense of community and some self-policing will occur.

ditzie has a logo

June 2nd, 2010 No comments

There’s no particular reason why, but I kinda felt that ditzie was being left out in the big-bad world of Internet tools while it lacked a logo. So, I did what any good administrator of a shoe-string budget project does: I fired up The Gimp and typed out the name in a nifty looking font. Voila, a logo. You can see it hanging out in the upper left hand corner of the page.

For fun, and since it’s what we do here, I also added a ditzie logo image set to the Beta site.
